| Gibson is leaving USC after a junior season in which he averaged 14.3 points, a team-high 9.0 rebounds and earned Pac-10 defensive player of the year honors. A tough, hard-nosed player, Gibson is not a bruiser but an athletic forward who plays bigger than his frame. He shot better than 60 percent as a junior and also averaged 2.9 blocks per game to rank fifth in the country. His long arms and quick reaction time are major reasons why he is such a good defender. Gibson showed great improvement with his midrange shot, which has become an important part of his repertoire since he has not yet shown the ability to take players off the dribble in the post. Because Gibson is not a wide body, there is some concern over whether he can defend bigger opponents in the NBA. He is a poor foul shooter at 62.9 percent. The Brooklyn native was known as a hard worker during his three seasons at USC after splitting his high school career at two different prep schools in California. Gibson is one of the older players in the draft, as he will turn 24 in June. That gives him an edge in maturity among his peers in this draft class, although it also hurts him because starting an NBA career at such an age may limit his upside. |
