West Ham United v Aston Villa
Time Commentary
95' FULL TIME SUMMARY
West Ham bag three vital points with a crucial win over Aston Villa at Upton Park. The home side took the lead at the climax of a scrappy first period, Mark Noble netting from the penalty spot after Habib Beye was adjudged to have fouled Zavon Hines. Villa had a golden opportunity to equalise immediately after the restart, but Rob Green saved an Ashley Young penalty after Da Costa fouled James Collins. The Villa winger was not to be denied, however, and beat Green moments later with an astonishing effort from the left flank. Although the visitors seemed well placed to push on after drawing level, it was West Ham who grew as the half progressed, with Hines looking increasingly threatening. Habib Beye's dismissal for a second caution was a blow to Villa, before Hines grabbed the winner in added time, finishing sweetly after being set up by Scott Parker. The only negatives for Gianfranco Zola were the first half injuries to Herita Ilunga and Carlton Cole, two of his key players.
95' OUT OF THE BOTTOM THREE
Hines' last-gasp winner lifts his side out of the Premier League relegation zone - the Hammers jump up to 16th with this victory. Villa stay seventh, and will be bitterly disappointed to have squandered the chance to break into the top four.
95' FULL TIME
West Ham 2, Aston Villa 1.
94' GOAL - HINES
Zavon Hines wins it for West Ham! Scott Parker feeds the young striker, who switches feet and smashes the ball past Friedel. Super goal, which should secure three vital points for the Hammers. West Ham 2, Aston Villa 1.
91' CORNER - ASTON VILLA
Villa win their umpteenth corner of the match and throw Dunne and Collins forwards. Julian Faubert makes the vital clearance.
88' NOBLE SHOT
Mark Noble takes a shot as the Hammers search for a late winner. Brad Friedel makes the stop.
86' SUBSTITUTION
It's a third right-back in a week for Villa - Luke Young comes on for Carew.
85' RED CARD - BEYE
Aston Villa have their right-back sent off for the second time in as many games, as Habib Beye receives a second caution for a foul on Spector. The Villa man takes an age to leave the field, before Martin O'Neill tells him to get a move on.
83' BOOKING
Guille Franco is booked for a real 'forward's challenge'.
81' IMPACT PLAYER
Hines has made a real impact this evening and has thrown the momentum towards the home side in this second half with his pace and infectious enthusiasm.
78' HINES EFFORT
More good work from Hines, who has been a constant threat since coming on. The West Ham forward breaks into the Villa box and sends a low effort just across the face of Freidel's goal.
74' ACROBATIC EFFORT
Hines fails to make any contact with the ball with an attempted bicycle kick, ending up in a heap on the deck. The Hammers striker's sheepish grin tells its own story.
73' HINES CHANCE
A poor pass out of defence by James Collins gifts the ball to Zavon Hines. The Hammers youngster fails to capitalise, however, firing an effort over the bar.
70' FRANCO EFFORT
The West Ham players are struggling with their footing on this Upton Park surface - Jack Collison works himself into a nice position but slips at the crucial moment. The ball ultimately falls to Guille Franco, who slices an effort over the bar.
67' COLLISON CHANCE
Jack Collison takes a shot for West Ham, which Brad Friedel saves.
64' WEST HAM CHANCES
West Ham, who are having their best spell of the night, go close as Faubert's cross ricochets through the area, eventually flashing past Brad Freidel's far-post. There's another melee as Upson goes close from the resultant corner, but the visitors scramble it away.
61' SHIRT-SWAPPING
Zavon Hines appears to have beaten Richard Dunne for pace, provoking the Villa defender into a spot of shirt-tugging. To the shock of the home crowd, Steve Bennett awards the free kick to the Villa man - Dunne gives the referee a grateful tap on the posterior as he jogs back to his position.
58' CORNER - ASTON VILLA
Yet another Villa corner is cleared by Upson. The crowd, who were silent for much of the first period, are really up for this one now.
55' PANTOMIME VILLAIN
The West Ham crowd, who were momentarily silenced by that wondergoal from Young, are soon back on their feet to jeer Nigel Reo-Coker. The Villa midfielder does well to win a corner for his side, which the Hammers get away.
52' GOAL - ASHLEY YOUNG
Ashley Young makes amends for his penalty miss with an outrageous strike. The Villa winger catches Green off his line with an effort from distance, which nestles in the top right corner of the goal. Did he mean it? He certainly celebrates like he did, charging off down the touchline. West Ham 1, Aston Villa 1.
51' BOOKING
Scott Parker goes into the book for for a foul. Ashley Young also saw yellow at half time for dissent.
49' MISSED!
An excellent save from Rob Green denies Young, pushing the ball around the post. That's the second penalty Young has missed this season - he also failed from the spot against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.
48' PENALTY - ASTON VILLA
Another controversial penalty decision at Upton Park. Da Costa is penalised for catching James Collins as the two teams tustle for position at a Villa corner. The West Ham players are outraged as Young prepares to take the spotkick...
46' SUBSTITUTION
Martin O'Neill makes a half-time switch, bringing on Ex-West Ham captain Nigel Reo-Coker. To say the Villa midfielder receives a mixed reaction from the home crowd would be charitable.
46' KICK OFF - SECOND HALF
We're back playing in East London.
45' HALF TIME SUMMARY
West Ham lead 1-0 at half-time, after Mark Noble converts an injury time penalty. Villa had the best of a cagey opening period, with Agbonlahor and Ashley Young threatening, although Rob Green was only really tested by Petrov's deflected volley. In fact, the home side's most formidible nemesis appeared to be the cold weather, as Herita Ilunga and Carlton Cole were substituted after apparent hamstring pulls. The Hammers looked bereft of inspiration after Cole's substitution, but it was the England forward's replacement, Zavon Hine, who won the crucial penalty, drawing a foul from Habib Beye in the Villa box. Replays appeared to show that the Villa right-back made contact with the ball, but Mark Noble made no mistake with the spotkick.
45' BOOKING
The Villa defenders aren't happy with the penalty decision - James Collins receives a yellow card for dissent as he continues his protests after the half time whistle. Perhaps he has a point - replays seem to show that Beye got some of the ball before catching Hines.
45' HALF TIME
West Ham 1, Aston Villa 0.
45' GOAL - NOBLE (PK)
Mark Noble strikes an excellent penalty past Brad Friedel to give the Hammers the lead. West Ham 1, Aston Villa 0.
45' PENALTY - WEST HAM
Is this how West Ham will get their goal? Habib Beye is adjudged to have brought down Zavon Hines in the area, and Steve Bennett points to the spot. Beye gets a booking.
45' HAMMERS DISQUIET
You can hear the dissatisfied mutterings of the West Ham fans - it's a struggle to see where the home side are going to get a goal from now Cole left the field.
42' FREE KICK - VILLA
That's the old Commentator's Curse for you - Warnock balloons a free kick into Row Z from the edge of the West Ham penalty area.
40' WARNOCK CROSS
Stephen Warnock, who has made an impressive start to his Villa career, delivers a threatening backpost cross. Jonathan Spector heads clear.
38' CAREW SHOT
Good work from John Carew, as he turns Da Costa and fires off a shot which Rob Green smothers.
35' CORNER - VILLA
Villa win their seventh corner of the evening, which Warnock takes. West Ham clear their lines, but the home side need to quell the seemingly endless stream of Aston Villa set pieces.
32' SUBSTITUTION
Zavon Hines comes on for the injured Cole. Zola will be crossing every available digit, hoping that the England striker's hamstring problem doesn't rule him out for too long.
29' DISASTER
Carlton Cole has pulled up - looks like another hamstring problem. Terrible news for the Hammers.
28' PACE TO SPARE
Gabriel Agbonlahor is looking threatening for the visitors, using his pace to great effect. West Ham do well to dispossess the Villa man and clear up field.
26' OVER THE BAR
Ashley Young crosses into the box, but Agbonlahor can only glance the ball over the bar.
23' OUCH!
The ball strikes Scott Parker just below the midriff - that looked a painful one. The West Ham fans give Parker a sympathetic cheer.
20' GREAT SAVE
An excellent save from Rob Green keeps the scores level. An awful backpass from Faubert gifts Villa a corner, from which Petrov strikes a scorching volley. There's a deflection off the back of a West Ham defender, but Green makes a top-class reaction save to tip the ball over the crossbar.
16' NOBLE EFFORT
Mark Noble has West Ham's best effort of the match so far, forcing Friedel into a decent save with a curling attempt. The Upton Park faithful enjoyed that, and are starting to find their voice after a subdued first quarter of an hour.
15' CORNER - ASTON VILLA
Villa win another corner, which is cleared by the home side. Much better defending by the Hammers.
12' PARKER SHOT
Brad Friedel makes his first save of the evening, a relatively simple stop from a Scott Parker shot.
9' POOR DEFENDING
And that's why West Ham are currently second bottom. Atrocious defending sees a Villa corner flash through the Hammers six yard box, with Green rooted to his line and the Irons defenders like statues. Fortunately for the home side, James Collins fails to make contact with the ball.
8' SUBSTITUTION
Gianfranco Zola is forced into an early change, as Jonathan Spector comes on for Herita Ilunga.
6' ILUNGA KNOCK
Herita Ilunga seems to have a hamstring problem - he's currently being attended to by the Hammers physio.
3' CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
Carlton Cole has made a busy start to the game, striking an attempt from 30 yards and almost catching out the Villa defence after beating Dunne for pace. It's not all one-way traffic however, as Gabriel Agbonlahor forces Rob Green into a decent save at the other end.
1' COLLISON ATTEMPT
Two early chances fall to Jack Collison within the first minute of the game. Firstly Franco sets up the young Hammer for a driven effort from 25 yards which balloons clear after striking a Villa defender. Seconds later Collison finds himself in an even better position but can't quite get the ball out of his feet, allowing the visitors to scramble clear. A bright start from the home side.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway at Upton Park.
0' TEAM NEWS - ASTON VILLA
Stiliyan Petrov is fit to start in the Villa midfield, although James Milner misses out through injury. Martin O'Neill elects to play three forwards, with Emile Heskey, Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew all starting in an attack-minded line-up. Habib Beye comes in at right-back, replacing the suspended Carlos Cuellar.
0' TEAM NEWS - WEST HAM
Gianfranco Zola makes three changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Sunderland on Saturday. Faubert and Da Costa come into the back four as Spector and Tomkins drop to the bench, while Parker replaces the suspended Kovac.
0' FULL LINE-UP - ASTON VILLA
Friedel, Beye, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Sidwell, Ashley Young, Heskey, Carew. Subs: Guzan, Luke Young, Albrighton, Delfouneso, Delph, Reo-Coker, Shorey.
0' FULL LINE-UP - WEST HAM UNITED
Green, Behrami, Upson, Faubert, Ilunga, Da Costa, Parker, Noble, Collison, Franco, Cole. Subs: Kurucz, Jimenez, Spector, Tomkins, Diamanti, Hines, Stanislas.
0' REF WATCH
Steve Bennett will take charge of this evening's match at Upton Park. Mr Bennett, from Kent, has refereed six Premier League contests this season, handing out 18 bookings. He is yet to dismiss a player in 2009-10.
0' INJURIES AND SUSPENSIONS
Both of these sides finished their respective matches on Saturday afternoon with only ten men on the pitch, Carlos Cuellar and Radoslav Kovac being two of the nine Premier League players that saw red over the weekend – both are suspended for tonight's encounter. Martin O'Neill also faces the prospect of losing two of the midfield quartet that started against Everton, due to knocks picked up in that match: James Milner has a calf strain, while Stiliyan Petrov is suffering from a shin problem. The Hammers have no new injury worries, although Dyer, Ashton, Boa Morte and Davenport are long-term absentees.
0' CENTRE-FORWARD CENTRAL
Tonight's match could be a battle of the centre-forwards, with both teams employing highly-rated target-men as the focal points of their attacking play. Carlton Cole has been West Ham's player of the season so far, drawing deserved plaudits for some of his performances and bagging an impressive six goals in only ten league appearances. Villa are blessed with two imposing strikers – John Carew and Emile Heskey – but, with Gabriel Agbonlahor currently in free-scoring form, only one is likely to start this match. Heskey was given the nod for Saturday's trip to Goodison Park, but Carew's second-half equaliser in that game may earn the big Norwegian a place in tonight's Villa starting eleven.
0' PREVIEW
Gianfranco Zola's Hammers take on Aston Villa tonight, seeking to end a Premier League winless streak that stretches right back to the opening day of the season. Spirited recent performances against Arsenal and Sunderland may have slightly lifted the gloom around Upton Park, but Zola will know that his side need to start picking up wins if they are to avoid a season-long struggle against relegation - Saturday's results left the Irons level on points with bottom side Portsmouth. In contrast, Martin O'Neill's Villa have made another promising start to a league campaign, picking up impressive wins against Liverpool and Chelsea. Three points from this evening's clash would catapult the Villains into the coveted fourth spot in the Premier League table, ahead of Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester City. Both sides will be viewing this one as a must-win, so we could be in for an entertaining contest. Kick off is at 1945GMT.
